Elizabeth Tasker Lowndes

Oil on canvas portrait painting of "Elizabeth Tasker Lowndes" (1726-1789), ca. 1754, by John Wollaston. Elizabeth's father was Benjamin Tasker, Sr. (1690-1768), a prominent Marylander who served as President of the Council of Maryland and was a temporary governor. She married Judge Christopher Lowndes (1713-1785) in 1747. The Judge was born in England and came to live in Prince George's County, Maryland in the 1730s. Among other public roles, Lowndes business was in the slave trade. He was responsible for the importation of more than ten thousand African slaves over several decades. An average of 13.5% of those brought over in Lowndes' slave ships died during the Atlantic crossing. The Lowndes couple made their home at "Bostwick" in Bladensburg, Maryland and had nine children. They are buried in Addison Chapel Cemetery, Seat Pleasant, Maryland.
