Ellen Ward Gilmor (Mrs. Robert Gilmor III)

Description

Oil on canvas portrait painting of Ellen Ward Gilmor (Mrs. Robert Gilmor III) (1811-1880), 1839, by William Edward West. Ellen was born in Cecil County to the Hon. William Henry Ward, Jr. (1785-1827) and Maria Reading Ward (1787-1863). Her father was an Associate Judge for the 6th Judicial District, which represented Baltimore and Harford Counties. In 1832, she married Harvard graduate and farmer Robert Gilmor III (1808-1875). They lived at "Glen Ellen", a 1,000 acre property north of Towson, Maryland, and had eleven children.
