Extraordinary Appearances in the Heavens and on Earth

Description

Watercolor on paper drawing of "Extraordinary Appearances in the Heavens and on Earth", August 2, 1797, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The scene features a steep hillside by the water, possibly the James River, and a white picket fence goes upwards in the background. At center is a covered wagon with a single brown horse or mule in harness. Two light brown horses are harnessed together, and a single painted horse, are detached from the wagon. There are two African American men with the horses and one carries a riding whip. Bright rays and hues explode outward from the detached horses.
