Hermanus Alricks

Description

Oil on panel portrait painting of "Hermanus Alricks" (1764-1840), ca. 1820, by an unattributed American artist. Hermanus was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His father, also named Hermanus Alricks (1727-1772), was one of the first settlers of Carlisle, Clerk of the Court, and Justice of the Peace for Cumberland County. The younger Hermanus (sitter) married Jane Park Alricks (1772-1844) and the couple had six children. Hermanus was a slave owner and Baltimore merchant for most of his adult life. He is buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.
