Home Sweet Home

Description

In 1911 the Dutch-born artist Edward van Reuth gathered his grandchildren, brothers, and sisters together for a Fourth of July celebration at his home, Echodale, in Baltimore. Raised glasses of beer indicate that this was a lively family party. His grandson at the bottom right holds a baseball bat, possibly getting ready for a family game. In the lower right corner, van Reuth inscribed, "Où! peut-on être mieux. Home! Home! Sweet Home. Edw. van Reuth. 1912."
