Letter from Mordecai Gist to General Nathaniel Greene

Description

A letter from General Mordecai Gist explaining to Nathaniel Greene the reasons why the state of Maryland has not yet completed their quota of troops as asked of them in Greene's requisitions. Gist says that the principal problem is the lack of funds to properly arm, feed, and pay the new recruits.

A young merchant from Baltimore, Mordecai Gist was born in Maryland on February 22, 1743. He rose to the rank of brigadier general in command of the Maryland Line of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he briefly sought political office in Maryland and was a charter member of the Maryland chapter of the Society of the Cincinnati. By 1784, Gist was a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, where he remained until his death in 1792.
