Description

Watercolor, pencil, pen, and ink on paper of "Lower End of the Falls of James River, Virginia", ca. 1796-1798, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. After emigrating to Virginia from England in 1796, Latrobe was hired to design the State Penitentiary in Richmond. This scene features the James River Falls and numerous houses and mill-type structures on the shore.
