Maria I. Cohen

Description

Oil on paper on board portrait painting of "Maria I. Cohen" (1794-1834), ca. 1815-1820, by Joseph Wood. Maria was one of ten children, and the only daughter, of prominent Richmond Jewish businessman Israel I. Cohen (1751-1803). After Israel's death, his widow and her children moved to Baltimore and became a wealthy and prominent Maryland family. Maria, who also went by "Miriam," is buried in Baltimore Hebrew Cemetery.
