Marianne Caton (Mrs. Robert Patterson)

Description

Half-length portrait of Marianne Caton (Mrs. Robert Patterson, 1788-1853), one of few copies after the original portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), also in the collection (2020.17). She is portrayed seated wearing a white dress with gold trim, a low, wide neckline and puffed sleeves with a flower at her waist. Her dark curly hair is upswept and parted in the middle. She wears a delicate pearl necklace with a red gem. There is a red curtain swathed across a blue sky in the background.
