Massachusetts militia passing through Baltimore
Description
A print depicting a Massachusetts militia passing through Baltimore, an event now known as the Baltimore riot of 1861, which resulted in the first deaths by hostile action of the American Civil War. On one side of the conflict were antiwar Maryland Democrats known as "Copperheads" and other Southern, Confederate sympathizers. On the other side were Massachusetts and Pennsylvania state militia regiments that had been called up for federal service and were on their way to Washington, D.C.
