Oil on canvas portrait painting of Matilda Cecilia Dowdall Shedden (Mrs. Thomas William Shedden) (1781-1855), 1847, by James Bogle. Matilda was born in Ireland. In 1806, she married merchant Thomas William Shedden (1781-1816) in Newark, New Jersey. They had one daughter: Janet Madeleine Cecilia Shedden Riggs (Mrs. George Washington Riggs) (1815-1871). Matilda died in Washington, D.C. and is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery.
