Mrs. Richard Tilghman and Sons

Group portrait of Mrs. Mary Gibson Tilghman (1766-1790) with sons William Gibson Tilghman (1785-1844) and John Lloyd Tilghman (1788-1831). The family is seated on a red sofa underneath a landscape painting. The woman has brown hair worn up except for two curls let down at each side. She wears a purple dress with a white fichu and half sleeves. The older son stands at her left side wearing a blue suit with a wide lace collar and a pink sash tied around his waist. He holds a blue bird, spreading its wings wide. The youngest son sits on her lap wearing a white gown with red shoes and reaches toward the bird. Both children have long blonde hair.
