Old Lexington Street looking west near Caroline Street

Description

A group of arabbers, or horse-cart vendors, selling fresh produce at the intersection of East Lexington Street and Caroline Street in East Baltimore, Maryland. The term “arabber” is unique to Baltimore and these sellers have operated in the city since the early 19th century. Recognized as a primarily African American folk tradition by the Arabber Preservation Society, arabbers continue to serve a practical purpose by bringing fruits and vegetables to neighborhoods that are underserved by grocery stores.
