Portrait of Enoch Pratt

Description

Daguerreotype portrait of Enoch Pratt (1808-1896), a Baltimore merchant and philanthropist. He founded the Enoch Pratt Free Library system in Baltimore, the first public circulating library in the country. In 1837, he married Maria Louisa Hyde (1821-1911), daughter of Samuel Hyde of Baltimore. Upon his death, his estate left $2 million to expand the Sheppard Asylum, which was renamed "The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital."
