Portrait of Jérôme-Napoléon Bonaparte
Description
Daguerreotype portrait after a painting of Jérôme-Napoléon Bonaparte (1784-1860), the youngest brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and King of Westphalia, 1807-1813. In 1803, he married Elizabeth Patterson (1785-1879), the daughter of William Patterson, a wealthy Baltimore merchant. The couple met during Bonaparte's visit to the United States, and were married by John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop of Baltimore. Napoleon disapproved of the match, and the marriage was annulled by 1806, leaving Elizabeth to raise her child with Jerome, Jerome Napoleon "Bo" (1805-1870), alone. In 1807, he remarried Catharina of Württemberg (1783-1835), with whom he had three more children.
