Portrait of Rachel Gratz Etting

Description

Daguerreotype portrait of Rachel Gratz Etting (1764-1831), after an engraving by Thomas Gimbrede. She was the daughter of Barnard Gratz (1738-1801) of York, Pennsylvania. In 1791, she married Solomon Etting (1764-1847), a Jewish merchant and politician in Baltimore, Maryland. The children from their marriage were: Richea Gratz (1792-1881); Frances (1794-1854); Samuel (1795-1862), married Ellen Hays; Rebecca (1798-1799); Kitty (1799-1837), married Benjamin I. Cohen; Ellen (1802-1877); Shinoh (1803-1878); and Barnard (1806-1862).
