Portrait of Samuel Chew

Description

Daguerreotype portrait of Samuel Chew (1832-1887). Chew, the son of Henry Banning Chew (1800-1866) and Harriet Ridgely (1803-1836), was a Baltimore County native and later a Philadelphia attorney. He inherited the estate, "Clivedon" outside Philadelphia from an aunt, Sophia Penn Chew. In 1861, he married Mary Johnson Brown (1839-1927), the daughter of David Sands Brown of Philadelphia. Their children were Ann Sophia Penn (1862-1930); Elizabeth Brown (1863-1958); and David Sands Brown (1866-1934).
