Description

A Victorian jet mourning jewelry set comprising a brooch and earrings with carved wreaths and multi-faceted stones originally owned by Sarah Spencer Smith Steiner (1838-1914). Born and raised in Guilford, Connecticut, Sarah lost a brother in 1868, her father in 1874, and a son in 1877. She moved to Frederick, Maryland in the 1870s. Following the death of her husband Lewis Henry Steiner (1827-1892), she moved to Baltimore until her death. She is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland. Her collection of mourning jewelry was later passed down to her three daughters, none of whom ever married.
