Spoon

Description

Folding spoon and knife kit from a soldier's mess kit during the Civil War. It's probable that the utensils belonged to the donor's grandfather, Francis David Shriver (1811-1895). A native of Frederick, Maryland, Shriver was a leather tanner and served as Mayor of Westminster (1850-1856) before the war. He joined the union army, serving as an officer with the 1st Delaware Cavalry Battalion, where he saw prominent action in the defense of his state during General Jubal Early's invasion of Maryland in 1864.
