The Alexander Contee Hanson Family

Description

Group portrait shows Alexander Contee Hanson, Sr (1749-1806) with his family seated outdoors. His wife, Rebecca Howard Hanson (c.1760-1806) holds the infant Alexander Hanson, Jr (1786-1819) in her lap with her right arm while their older son, George Hanson (b.1784) stands and plays with a dog. An enslaved African American girl wearing a headband, a red skirt and a white blouse with a low wide neckline stands in shadow at left, facing the family. A willow tree and ocean with sailing vessel are visible in the background.
