The presentation of a gold snuff box to the Reverend R.T. Breckenridge D. D.

Lithograph with the full title, "The Presentation of a Gold Snuff Box to the Rev. R. J. Breckenridge D. D. in Bethel Church, by Rev. Darius Stokes in behalf of the colored people of Baltimore as a gift of gratitude. Dez. 18th A.D. 1845." The print depicts the titular event as it occurred on December 18th, 1845. On that date, the congregation of Bethel, led by Reverend Darius Stokes, thanked the Presbyterian minister Reverend Robert Jefferson Breckinridge for his efforts to prevent proposed legislation placing restrictions on free African Americans and on the rights of slave owners to manumit their slaves. Text at the bottom of the print reads, "Entered according to act of congress in [undecipherable] 1845 by Rev. Daniel A. Payne in the clerks office of the Dist. Court of MD." Payne was later bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
