Description

Silver covered tureen on an ovular pedestal, embellished with a beaded border on base and edge of lip. There are two handles in the shape of serpents and two decorative snake heads and the visage of a bearded man on either side. The lid has a serpent designed handle. This silver tureen was given to the Hon. George Washington Dobbin (1809-1891), Judge, Supreme Bench of Baltimore City (1867-1882), upon his retirement in 1882. It is one of a set of three (See 1950.108.19 a,b and 2020.38.1 a,b). Upon his death they were split up amongst three of his children, and they remained separated until being reunited in the MCHC museum collection.

Notes

The tureen is engraved: "GWD / To the / Honorable George W. Dobbin, / from the / Bar of Baltimore / on his retirement from the Bench / 1882." The underside of the base is engraved: "Samuel Kirk & Son" and "11 oz." This dish was passed to Dobbin's son, Robert Archibald Dobbin, Sr. (1839-1911), who passed it to his son, George Washington Dobbin, Sr. (1870-1928), who passed it to a son, George Washington Dobbin, Jr. (1909-1976), who passed it to his daughter (donor) Anne Jackson Dobbin Bailliere.
