View From the Porch of Rippon Lodge
Description
Watercolor on paper drawing of "View From the Porch of Rippon Lodge", July 1796, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. From the porch, the artist sketched the front yard and Neabsco Creek, with numerous sailing ships, which flows into the Potomac River near Dumfries, Virginia. Built in 1747 as a tobacco plantation house, the home was owned by the Blackburn family during Latrobe's visit in July 1796.
