Description

Watercolor on paper drawing of "View of Fishing Shore on York River at Airy Plains, looking to the East", 1797, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The artist captured several views of "Airy Plains", the estate of Henry Banks (1781-1817) along the York River in Virginia. This watercolor features the river at left, with several enslaved African Americans with two other men in pointed hats near a small wooden boat. Another boat is upside down on the bank and an eroding high bluff dominates the center. On the right and in the distance is the house "Airy Plains".
