The scene prominently features the James River in front of Richmond, up on higher ground, among the marsh and wooded landscape. Bushrod Washington (1762-1829) was a lawyer, Virginia politician, nephew of President George Washington (1732-1799), and an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The Virginia State Capitol building, designed by Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) and Charles-Louis Clérisseau (1721-1820), and completed in 1792, looms large at center with white columns.
