William Stone

Description

Oil on canvas oversize portrait painting of "William Stone" (1739-1821). Stone was born in Bermuda and became a maritime captain, ship owner, and merchant. In this painting, he is depicted in Baltimore in the early 1770s standing before a lovely view of the Chesapeake Bay. Stone holds a spyglass, has a sextant at his feet, and points to his sloop "Charming Polly" in full sail behind him. In 1778, he married Hannah Cockey Owings (1751-1817) and they had five children. Stone is buried in Saint Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery, Owings Mills, Maryland.
