Wool dress

Description

The dress was designed by Claire McCardell (1905-1958) and has one of her signature design features, dolman sleeves cut as one piece with the bodice which created more wearing ease without the constraint of armhole seams. This dress was made up as recommended in a soft, lightweight wool, from Miron Woolens, according to its sewn-in label. It is not known if the donor, Catherine S. Faulds, had the dress made to order. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
