Description
Silver electrotype commemorative medal featuring Lord Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron of Baltimore (1605-1675) (front), and his wife, the Lady Anne Arundell (c. 1615-1649) (reverse). Calvert's title was "First Lord Proprietary, Earl Palatine of the Provinces of Maryland and Avalon in America". He was a major proponent of religious tolerance for Catholics and Ann Arundel County, Maryland is named after his wife. Front Latin inscription reads: "DMS - Cacilivs - Baro - De -Baltemore - Absolv - DMS - Terramaria - Et - Avalonie". The reverse inscription reads: "D NA - Anna - Arvndelia - Pvlcherrima - Et - Optima - Conivx - Cecilii - Predicti". Electrotype coins or medals such as this gained in popularity and production in the late-19th century. This is a reproduction of a silver coin originally produced c. 1640.
