Baltimore Schuetzen-Park

Description

A view of Schuetzen Park, a private recreation area used by the German immigrant community, on Belair Road (now Gay Street) in southwestern Baltimore, Maryland. Operated by the Schuetzen Society, a German shooting club, the organization leased the grounds it occupied from the Carroll family estate. Facilities on the forty-five-acre park included a target range, bowling alleys, a dining hall, a ballroom, and many gardens. Baltimore's German population would hold marksman and archery competitions at the park as well as host festivals, picnics, outdoor concerts, and holiday celebrations.
