Dress

Description

The exuberant and artistic styles of 1830s’ fashion captured the Romantic era’s revival of motifs from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Such historic influences can be seen in this dress’s vivid navy blue and apricot color contrast, multi-tiered scalloped hem, and dramatic gigot, or “leg-of-mutton,” sleeves. This dress was worn by Eliza Eichelberger Ridgely (1803–1867).
