Oil on canvas landscape painting of "Druid Hill, Felling Trees", ca. 1940, by Jacob Glushakow. Druid Hill Park was built in 1860. It is among the oldest public parks in the United States. In 1948, a number of African American tennis players, protesting discrimination of recreational facilities, were arrested for playing on "White Only" tennis courts. In response, Baltimore writer H. L. Mencken wrote a lengthy column in the "Baltimore Sun" in protest of these discriminatory policies.
