Description

A 4th regiment United States Colored Troops Civil War flag. In August of 1863, the “Colored Ladies of Baltimore” presented this hand-painted, hand-sewn silk flag to the Fourth Regiment of United States Colored Troops. It is one of only twenty-five U.S.C.T. flags known to survive today The silk flag was carried in the 1864 Battle of New Market Heights, outside of Richmond, Virginia. Sergeant Major Christian Fleetwood seized this flag before bravely joining the battle. Fleetwood would eventually be awarded a Medal of Honor for his contributions to the war.
