Description

A small chip of wood identified as a piece of the gallows from which famed abolitionist, John Brown (1800-1859), was hanged for his raid of the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia on October 16, 1859. The inscription on the attached label reads, "A piece of the scaffold upon which John Brown was hung at Charlestown, Va. 2 December 1859."
