Mourning ring owned by Caleb Dorsey.
The coffin style mourning ring dates back to 1719. While we think of the imagery as being rather morbid today, the coffin shape and skull motif served not only in remembrance of the dead, but as a memento mori to the living, a blunt reminder of the brevity of life.
Gift of Mrs. J. Holus Whitely.
