Portrait of Joshua W. Baker

Description

A portrait of Union Army veteran Joshua W. Baker (1837-1909) seated on a horse and holding a saber, possibly at a Fourth of July celebration. Born into slavery, Baker served in the 39th United States Colored Infantry Regiment, which participated in the Siege of Petersburg and the capture of Fort Fisher. After the Civil War, he raised a family of four as a laborer in the Maryland towns of Flintstone and Hancock.
