Portrait of Juanita Jackson Mitchell

Description

Juanita Jackson Mitchell (1913-1992) is pictured seated in front of a curtain. Mitchell was an educator, civil rights activist, and lawyer. Mitchell taught in Baltimore high schools and founded the Baltimore City-Wide Young People's Forum in 1931, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Youth Movement in 1935. She was the first African American woman to attend the University of Maryland Law School in 1950 and practice law in Maryland.
