Portrait of Verda Welcome

Description

Verda Mae Freeman Welcome (1907-1990) was a public school teacher and civil rights activist. Welcome served in the Maryland General Assembly's House of Delegates for the fourth district of Baltimore City, from 1959 to 1962, where she advocated for equality for all Marylanders during and after the Civil Rights era. In 1962, Welcome was elected to serve in the Maryland Senate, becoming one of the first African American women to do so.
