Rapier

Description

Rapier with silver gilt grip and guard. Given to Governor Thomas Johnson (1732-1819) by George Washington (1732-1799), said to have been presented at Valley Forge. Triangular blade decorated and engraved on one side with the phrase "Si Fortune me tourment," and the other side "La Fortune me Contente."
