Robert Gilmor, Jr.

Oil on canvas portrait painting of "Robert Gilmor, Jr." (1774-1848), July 1833, by Henry Inman. Robert Gilmor, Jr. was one of five children of Maryland Revolutionary War leader Robert Gilmor, Sr. (1748-1822) and Louisa Airey Gilmor (1745-1827). He became a prominent merchant, ship owner, and was a major art collector. Gilmor, Jr. married twice: first in 1802 to Elizabeth Susanna Cooke Gilmor (1783-1803), and in 1807, to South Carolina socialite and fashion icon Sarah Reeve Ladson Gilmor (1790-1866). He left no children.
