Sabina V. Bowers Beach

Description

Oil on canvas portrait painting of "Sabina V. Bowers Beach" (1824-1896), 1865, by Edward Bowers. Sabina was born in Baltimore to John Henry Bowers (1764-1825) and Catherine Kohl Bowers (1782-1864). She married Baltimore lumber merchant Seth C. Beach (1823-1865) in 1849. Originally from Flint, Michigan, after the marriage, Seth moved their family back to his home town. The couple had two children: John Edward Beach (1850-1918) and Charles Beach (1863- ). Sabina is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Flint. The Maryland Center for History and Culture also owns portraits of her husband Seth (1970.81.3) and of her son John Edward Beach (1982.2.6) as a young boy. All three portraits were painted by Sabina's brother and artist Edward Bowers (1822-1870).
