Watercolor on paper of "Sketch of Washington's Island, James River, Virginia", April 14, 1796, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. After emigrating to Virginia from England in 1796, Latrobe was hired to design the State Penitentiary in Richmond among other projects in the state. This scenes swift currents of the James River near Richmond, Washington's Island, dense foliage, and two African American boatmen in the foreground.
