Description

Wood, inlaid game table made by Henry Smith, Jr. (1853-1916), c. 1870-1875. Smith, Jr was born in Maryland and was the son of German immigrants. He attended public schools and the Maryland Institute (MICA) to study architecture. His father, Henry Smith, Sr. (1831-1890) was a carpenter and builder who established his building firm around 1862. By the 1880s, the firm was renamed Henry Smith & Son. Smith, Jr was a student at MICA during the 1870s and made this inlaid game table during that time.
