The massacre at Baltimore
Description
A color print depicting the Baltimore riot of 1861, which resulted in the first deaths by hostile action of the American Civil War. The print shows a group of armed Union soldiers surrounded by a mob of civilians. While the soldiers aim rifles at the mob, the civilians are depicted throwing stones and some also aim rifles right back. Visible behind the band of soldiers are the sails of tall ships in the Baltimore Harbor. The image is captioned, "The Massacre at Baltimore. The Sixth Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers Resisting the Mob While Passing Throuht [sic] the City on Their Way to Washington, April 19th, 1861."
