Description

An illustration from William's Still's 1872 publication "The underground railroad: A record of facts, authentic narratives, letters, &c., narrating the hardships, hairbreadth escapes and death struggles of the slaves in their efforts for freedom / as related by themselves and others." The illustration is accompanied by the title "Twenty-eight fugitives escaping from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The illustration depicts men, women, and children fleeing in the rain.
