Worship of the North
Description
Photograph of a sketch from Baltimore, Maryland, dentist, artist, and Southern sympathizer Adalbert Volck. This piece was included as the first plate in the work Sketches from the Civil War in North America that was released under Volck's pseudonym V. Blada in 1863. The image depicts a man sitting on a ledge labeled "Chicago Platform" above another figure laying on a stack of bricks labeled "Negro Worship," "Spirit Trapping," "Free Love," "Witchburning," "Socialism", "Atheism," "Rationalism," and "Puritanism." Surrounding the central image are caricatures of various Northern leaders and abolitionists, such as Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, and Henry Ward Beecher.
